Football playoff pictures coming into focus
As the 2012 high school football season comes to a close, playoff pictures continue to become clearer for schools across the state.
McLouth High (7-1, 3-0 district) has already clinched the Class 2-1A District 2 championship and will play at home in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs will play host to Leavenworth-Immaculata (2-6, 0-3) on Friday, but the game has no bearing on the postseason. Tonganoxie High (3-5, 1-1) is in contention for a 4A District 2 title or second-place finish when it travels Thursday to Basehor-Linwood (4-4, 1-1).
Here are the possible playoff scenarios for the Bulldogs and Chieftains as we enter the final week of the regular season:
- McLouth’s 36-6 victory last week at Valley Falls ensured the team its first district title since 2005. With that title comes a home game in the first round of the playoffs against the second-place finisher from District 1. Centralia (8-0, 3-0) currently sits atop that district’s standings and will play host to Jackson Heights (6-2, 2-1) on Friday. The loser of that game will finish second in the district and must travel Nov. 2 to McLouth for the 2-1A postseason opener.
- Tonganoxie’s future isn’t nearly as certain, as it currently sits in a four-way tie with Basehor-Linwood, Perry-Lecompton (3-5, 1-1) and Jeff West (4-4, 1-1). The Chieftains control their own playoff destiny, as a win against the Bobcats would guarantee a postseason berth, but they’ll need some help in the other district game to clinch the top spot. THS won its head-to-head meeting with Jeff West last week, so if the Chieftains win Thursday and the Tigers defeat Perry-Lecompton, the Chieftains will win the district title. If Tonganoxie wins, but Perry-Lecompton defeats Jeff West, THS will finish second.
- The 4A District 2 winner will play host to the second-place finisher from District 1 in the first round of the playoffs, while the District 2 runner-up will travel to the District 1 winner. Piper (6-2, 2-0) has already clinched that district’s top spot. The winner of Thursday’s meeting between Atchison (5-3, 1-1) and Sumner Academy (2-6, 1-1) will finish second. The 4A playoffs begin on Tuesday.
