The Tonganoxie High volleyball team got its first taste of tournament action Saturday at the Rossville Invitational. The Chieftains opened tournament play with back-to-back wins, but then bowed out with back-to-back losses, bringing their season record to 6-4.

THS opened play with a three-set victory against Ottawa, 15-25, 25-23, 25-14. Senior Jenny Whitledge had 10 kills, while senior Madee Walker and junior Marissa Martin each had five digs.

The Chieftains needed just two sets to defeat Clay Center in their second match, winning by scores of 25-19 and 27-25. Whitledge again paced THS with 11 kills. Fellow senior Olivia Hollingsworth had seven digs, and Hollingsworth and freshman Lauren Jackson each recorded three service aces.

The win streak came to a halt when THS fell to Circle High School (Towanda) in straight sets, 25-13, 25-19. Whitledge tallied just seven kills, but led the team with 13 digs in the final match of pool play.

Following their 2-1 pool record, the Chieftains advanced to an eight-team bracket where they faced Wamego in the first round. The Red Raiders won in three sets, 25-4, 24-26, 25-12, ending the Chieftains’ tournament run. Whitledge had 12 kills and Martin notched a season-high 18 digs.

Holton won the tournament, defeating Wamego in the championship match. Ottawa took third, winning against Circle in consolation action.

THS will be back in action Tuesday when it plays host to Kaw Valley League opponent Mill Valley.
