Counterfeit bills circulating in Tonganoxie

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 15, 2013

Counterfeit bills are cropping up in Tonganoxie.

Tonganoxie police Lt. Billy Naff said First State Bank and Trust has reported five bills coming through in nightly deposits. The counterfeit notes, both $10 and $100 bills, were used at Casey’s General Store, Fastrax Conoco and Sonic.

Naff said standard bills have green and red fibers and a hologram. The counterfeit bills lack those characteristics. Some bills had repeat serial numbers also, Naff said.

The first one was reported to police Jan. 9. He said the investigation was ongoing.

“Obviously we would encourage anyone who finds them or has any information to contact us immediately,” Naff said.

The police department’s number is 913-369-3754.

Naff said tips for how to detect counterfeit money can be found on the Secret Service’s website, secretservice.org, under the “Know Your Money” link.

He suggested even taking inventory of the bills you currently have. If anything looks suspicious, “give us a call and we can take a look at it,” he said.
