Chieftain track teams take 5th at KVL meet
The Tonganoxie track teams both finished in fifth place at the Kaw Valley League Meet Wednesday at Mill Valley.
On the girls side, Tonganoxie accumulated 62.5 points finishing behind Piper, Basehor-Linwood, Lansing and league champion Mill Valley (180 points).
The Chieftain girls had five top-five finishes, led by champion Haley Griffin in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and the 4×800-meter relay team, which also took first. In second was Jenny Whitledge in the high jump (5-4) and Jackie Whitledge in the long jump (16-7). Third place went to Jenny Whitledge in the long jump (16-4) and Sophia Wetta in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:03.41.
A trio of athletes placed fourth, including Kourtni Freemeyer in the pole vault (7-6), Holley Thompson in the discus (102-4) and Hannah Kemp in the javelin (102-1).
Also scoring for the Tonganoxie girls was Tressa Walker, who came in sixth in the 800-meter run with a mark of 2:42.13.
For the Chieftain boys, who totaled 57 points, Ben Johnson won a league title in the high jump, clearing a season-best height of six feet.
The boys had no runner-up finishers, but Johnson (110-meter hurdles, 16.1), Brad Andrews (pole vault, 10-6), Cody Snyder (discus, 136-9) and Thomas Miller (javelin, 148-7), all place third in their respective events.
Coming in fourth were Devan Smith in the high jump (5-10), Seth Ahart in the pole vault (10-0) and Snyder in the shot put (46-9 1/2). In sixth was Johnson in the 300 hurdles (43.53), John Lean in the long jump (19-7) and the Chieftain 4×400 relay team (3:46.10).
The boys team champion was Mill Valley (182 points).
