Chieftain softball falls to Bonner Springs

By Mirror Staff Report - | May 14, 2013

The Tonganoxie High softball team’s season came to an abrupt end Monday with an 18-3 loss to Bonner Springs in Class 4A regional action at Eudora.

The Chieftains (11-8), who split with the Braves (6-12) to end the regular season, jumped out to a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning. The lead was short-lived, though, as BSHS reeled off five runs in the top of the second. THS got one run back in the home half of the inning, but following a scoreless third, the Braves erupted for 12 runs in the fourth inning.

The mercy rule went into effect when the Chieftains failed to score in the bottom of the fourth.

THS managed just four hits off of Bonner Springs pitching. Juniors Lainy Walker and Morgan Oroke each went 1-for-1 with a run batted in. Senior Jaycee Knipp and junior Caly Ingle-Maxwell each went 1-for-3. An RBI double by Knipp was the team’s only extra-base hit.

Oroke suffered the loss in the pitcher’s circle, allowing 12 runs in two innings. Freshman Sammi Bates didn’t fare much better, giving up six more runs in two innings of relief.

Despite the loss, the Chieftains ended their season with a winning record for the first time since 2007.
