Cerny headlines McLouth All-NEK selections
Following its second consecutive district title, the McLouth High football team is well-represented on the inaugural All-Northeast Kansas League team, released this week by league officials.
Drew Cerny lead the Bulldog recipients with first-team selections at running back, safety and kick returner. He put up better than 1,250 yards on the ground while scoring 20 total touchdowns — 18 rushing and two receiving — and helped the MHS defense give up just 14.1 points per game. The Bulldogs were at their best late, allowing just 9.8 points per game in their final six contests.
Offensive lineman/linebacker Brady Sullivan, defensive lineman Dylan Stauch and receiver/punter Nick McAferty joined Cerny as first-team selections. Sullivan helped pave the way for an offense that averaged more than 300 yards per game, and he and Stauch helped the defense limit six opponents to a single touchdown or less. McAferty put up big offensive numbers in 2013, including eight receiving touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns.
McAferty also earned a second-team defensive selection at linebacker, joining lineman Jake Copeland. Meanwhile, quarterback Jack Courtney and defensive end Dylan Dover earned honorable mentions.
McLouth’s improvement on the volleyball court didn’t go unnoticed, as a pair of juniors earned all-league selections. Summer Cerny was a first-team pick, while Angela Dailey was an honorable mention. The duo led MHS to a 13-24 season, a big step up from the team’s 3-31 mark in 2012.
Ryan Bristol, McLouth’s first state cross country qualifier since 2004, earned a second-team nod with an 11th-place finish at the NEK meet Oct. 17 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence. The top seven finishers in each race earn first-team selections, while spots 8-15 are good for second-team selections.
