Kansas City Connection: Music, Shakespeare, festivals and food

By Lucas Wetzel - | Aug 31, 2014

With so many great events scheduled for the start of September, I decided to put together this list of 15 reasons to visit Kansas City this weekend. You want Shakespeare? We got it. Chalk art? Check. A Spinach Festival? I’m afraid so. Without any further fanfare, here are 15 standout events, in no particular order.

Water is food

The Ice Bucket Challenge did an incredible job of raising funds and awareness about ALS. But globally, many more people suffer from a lack of clean water. A free concert Saturday at the City Market aims to highlight this issue, with music from three world music performers, Metatone, Mount Veritas Orchestra, and Gamelan Genta Kasturi. The music starts at 7 p.m.

Shakespeare plus

Shakespeare’s tragedy and Tom Stoppard’s absurdist spin-off will be in rotation at Union Station’s City Stage from now through Sept. 28, presented by the Kansas City Actors Theatre. Tickets range from $12 for students to $40 for adults. Visit unionstation.org/calendar for showtimes.

Celebrate the Union Station Centennial

Friday night, Union Station will be celebrating its 100th birthday with a free concert, digital light display and fireworks display. Visit unionstation.org/100years for details.

Johnson County Old Settlers Festival

Downtown Olathe will pay tribute to its historical roots from Thursday through Saturday with concerts, a carnival, auto show, ice cream socials, arts and crafts, food and fun. Visit johnsoncountyoldsettlers.com for a full schedule.

India Fest

The India Association of Kansas City is presenting a celebration of its country’s culture, fashion, food and people on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Overland Park Convention Center, 6000 College Blvd. in Overland Park. Visit iakc.org for more info.

Art Westport

Westport’s annual art fair will present artwork, crafts and jewelry from over 100 artists from the region, with abundant options for food and drink on each block. The show runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. See artwestport.net to preview work from participating artists.

Buzz Beach Ball

Arctic Monkeys and Weezer are the big-name draws of this mini-festival at Sporting Park on Friday. The music starts at 3:30 p.m. and tickets are available for $30 and up at beachballkc.com.

Breeders at the Record Bar

You might remember them from their hit song, “Last Splash,” way back in 1993, but the Breeders are still touring and playing new material on their 2014 tour, which stops at the Record Bar Wednesday night at 10 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Pops in the Park

On Monday, the Kansas City Symphony presents its annual free concert at Shawnee Mission Park, with selections ranging from Sousa to “Star Wars.” Gates open at 5 p.m. for the free concert, which starts at 7. Visit kcsymphony.org for more details.

Kansas City Chiefs Season Opener

Next Sunday, the Chiefs look to repeat last season’s tremendous start with a noon matchup vs. the Tennessee Titans. Visit kcchiefs.com for a full schedule.

Chalk and Walk

Dozens of professional and amateur artists will turn the bricks of Crown Center into colorful chalk canvases at this weekend event, which also includes street performers, food and activities. The Chalk and Walk runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Crown Center Sauare, 2450 Grand Blvd. Visit kcchalkandwalk.org for more details.

Legendary country band and 2011 Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductee Riverrock will celebrate its 40th anniversary as a band on Friday at Knuckleheads Saloon. The Dixie Cadillacs start the show at 8:30 p.m.

Spinach Festival

Apparently Lenexa was known as the spinach capital of the world back in the 1930s. This event pays tribute to Lenexa’s leafy legacy with a spinach recipe contest, the world’s largest spinach salad, children’s events, and arts and crafts. Spinach Festival takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park near 87th and Lackman.

NEKC International Taste and Tour

The Northeast Neighborhood of Kansas City is one of the most diverse and architecturally interesting areas in the region, and this event Saturday evening event includes a trolley tour, swing dance performance, and an evening of dinner and dancing with foods from Ethiopia, France, Haiti, Vietnam and Somalia, among others. Tickets are $40 and can be found at nekcchamber.com.
