Tonganoxie Chamber reflects on year

By Shawn Linenberger - | Dec 16, 2014

Cindy Cash told of famous Kansan Alf Landon’s plans for a housing development years ago. He personally planned for oak trees that were carefully spaced.

She noted that Landon wouldn’t be around in 50 years to enjoy the full beauty of the trees, but he had the vision and foresight to plan for the future.

Cash, the former president for the Kansas City, Kansas Chamber of Commerce, spoke earlier this month at the Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce’s annual luncheon, which took place at Cornerstone Family Worship.

Cash urged chamber members to have proper foresight when working to build a more vibrant Tonganoxie.

She told chamber members they were doing a great job, and that with anything, there’s more that can be done.

She also stressed that one size does not fit all when it comes to chambers of commerce.

“There is no right or wrong in your community,” she said about the organization.

Cash also urged the chamber reach out to be the experienced people in the community and the up and comers, the “young guns” as she called them.

Another point of emphasis was building partnerships with others in the area, such as Basehor, Kansas City, Kan., Leavenworth County and others.

Finally, she told the chamber that Tonganoxie has great potential, especially with the turnpike interchange south of town.

“It might not be five years, but folks that’s something you need to target,” she said.

Cash mentioned the potential of the interchange by what happened down the road in Wyandotte County with Kansas Speedway and The Legends.

“Twenty years ago would you have believed that would have happened,” Cash said. “You know where we were. I was here. So were some of you.”

During the meeting, which about 40 people attended, the chamber also selected its board for 2015.

Next year’s board will be Tonganoxie USD 464 Superintendent Lyn Rantz, First State Bank’s Steve Christensen, Rev. Ron Swaim with Cornerstone Family Worship, Domino’s Pizza owner John Jones, independent bookkeeper Michelle Derry, John Vohs with Kramer and Associates, Rev. Jeff Clinger with Tonganoxie United Methodist Church, Julie Hansen with Vintage Park Assisted Living, Samantha O’Hare from Tonganoxie Nursing Center, Jamie Smith at Community National Bank, The Jewel on Main’s Roz McCommon and Greg Orscheln.
