The Chieftains (6-6, 4-3 KVL) entered the second half with a 33-25 lead and weathered a comeback attempt by the Class 5A Jaguars (7-5, 4-3) in the third quarter. The lead shrunk to four with 2:14 left in the period, but THS closed out the quarter with five straight points. The advantage reached 10 early in the fourth and grew to as much as 15 in the game’s final minutes.

THS jumped out to a 15-9 lead after one quarter, but Mill Valley battled back to within one midway through the second. Grizzle answered the Jaguar charge with a three-point play, sparking 12-5 run that gave THS a 33-25 lead at the break.

Grizzle made the Jaguars pay early and often, going 13-of-14 from the field. He also led THS with eight rebounds. Logan Koch and Drew Boatwright led Mill Valley with 18 and 17 points, respectively.

THS will be back on its home floor Saturday for a makeup game against Ottawa, while the Jaguars will host Bishop Ward on Tuesday.

The Mill Valley girls used an 11-3 fourth-quarter run to pull away in a 10-point victory against Tonganoxie.

MVHS (8-6, 4-3 KVL) stretched a one-point halftime lead to four entering the final period and hit several free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. The Jaguars took their first lead of the game midway through the first quarter and never allowed the Chieftains (5-7, 2-5) to go back in front.

Whitney Hazlett led all scorers with 11 points, including a 7-of-8 effort from the free throw line. She was the only player to reach double figures. Tonganoxie’s Katelyn Waldeier paced the Chieftains with seven points.
