Chieftain basketball teams fall to Piper

By Justin Nutter - | Feb 14, 2014

Tonganoxie cut an eight-point deficit to two with less than 30 seconds left, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback in a 62-58 loss Friday against Piper.

The Chieftains (7-8, 4-5 Kaw Valley League) entered the fourth quarter down 49-43, and the Pirates (10-4, 6-3) extended their advantage to eight early in the period. THS started to chip away at the deficit, and a layup by Jared Sommers made it 60-58 with 28.4 seconds left, but Piper’s Vincent Eskina hit two free throws about 15 seconds later to give the Pirates a double-digit lead for good.

Piper jumped out to a 19-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but THS used a 12-3 run to take a 26-25 lead midway through the second. The teams traded the lead for the rest of the half, and a 3-pointer by Jack Dale at the halftime buzzer sent the Chieftains into the locker room ahead by two, 33-31.

Sommers led all scorers with 16 points, while Dale added 13. Piper’s Luke Long scored all but two of his team-high 15 points in the first half.

Tonganoxie will continue KVL action Tuesday when it travels to Turner. The Chieftains defeated the Bears on Jan. 17 at home, 66-58.

The Piper girls pulled away in the second half for a seven-point win against Tonganoxie.

THS (5-10, 2-7 KVL) battled the Piper (14-2, 9-0) to a 25-25 tie at halftime, and the score remained even midway through the third quarter, but back-to-back buckets by the Pirates gave them the first two-possession lead by either team, 33-29. They added one more shot before the end of the quarter for a six-point advantage.

The deficit grew to eight with 5:05 left in the fourth. THS scored five of the next seven to make it 41-36, but that’s as close as it got.

Neither team could gain an advantage in the opening minutes, as they found themselves deadlocked at 15-all after one quarter. The seesaw battle continued into the second, as the deficit never grew to more than three points in either direction before halftime.

Piper’s Megan Woolley led all scorers with 14 points. Kara Banks and Emily Soetaert led the Chieftains with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
