Kara Banks scored a career-high 20 points and the Tonganoxie girls avenged two earlier losses to Lansing with a 59-50 win Thursday at THS.

The Chieftains (7-10, 4-7 Kaw Valley League) jumped out to a 16-6 lead early in the second quarter, but the Lions (8-9, 5-6) scored the 10 to force a tie. The teams battled for the remainder of the half and went into the locker room tied at 27-27.

Tonganoxie opened up a 38-30 lead midway through the third quarter, but Lansing answered with a 13-4 run to take its first lead of the half with 6:34 left in the fourth quarter. The Chieftains rebounded, scoring the next 10 points to take the lead they wouldn’t again relinquish.

Despite struggling at the free throw line for most of the season, THS hit several to stay in front in the game’s final minutes. As a team, the Chieftains went 27-of-37 from the charity stripe, led by Banks’ 12-of-15 effort.

Katelyn Waldeier just missed a double-double with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Emily Soetaert and Tressa Walker added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Lansing’s Mikayla Zielinski led the Lions with 13 points.

THS will play its third game in four days when it faces Bishop Ward Friday at Kansas City Kansas Community College. The Chieftains defeated the Cyclones in their first meeting on Jan. 7, 53-31.
