Chieftain basketball teams sweep Bishop Ward
Four players reached double figures as the Tonganoxie High boys opened 2014 with an 82-55 drubbing of Bishop Ward at home.
The Chieftains (2-2, 1-2 Kaw Valley League) trailed by three points after one quarter, outscored the Cyclones by a 70-40 margin the rest of the way.
Ben Johnson and Carl Hecht led the offensive charge with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Both were career-highs. Meanwhile, Tyler Ford added 13 points and Jack Dale 12. James Grizzle pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
THS will be back on the road Friday for a KVL rivalry matchup against Basehor-Linwood.

Fast start powers THS girls to second win
The Chieftain girls raced to a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in a 53-31 victory against the Cyclones.
THS (2-2, 1-2) limited Bishop Ward to 14 first-half points and took a 32-14 lead into the locker room at halftime. The lead grew to as many as 27 after the break.
Tressa Walker and Kara Banks joined Soetaert in double figures with career-highs of 11 and 10 points, respectively. Katelyn Waldeier just missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
