THS girls win, boys fall in Invitational openers
The Tonganoxie High girls trailed by three points midway through the fourth quarter, but went on a game-ending, 10-2 run to secure a 40-35 win against Eudora in their Tonganoxie Invitational opener on Tuesday.
THS (4-4) entered the final period down by two, and Eudora maintained its one-possession lead for better than five minutes. However, a jumper by Cheyenne Ford and a layup by Tressa Walker put the Chieftains back in front, 34-33, with 3:30 remaining. The Cardinals weren’t able to find an answer on the other end, and THS led by two possessions the rest of the way.
A slow start by the Eudora allowed the Chieftains to take a 10-3 lead at the end of the opening period, but the Cardinals responded in the second and cut the deficit to one at the break, 15-14.
Katelyn Waldeier led the Chieftains with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. She was the only THS player to reach double figures. the Chieftains struggled mightily at the free throw line, going a combined 12-of-29. Eudora’s Makaila Garcia paced the Cardinals with 13 points.
With the win, THS advances to the championship semifinal, where it will play Silver Lake at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The Eagles advanced with a 67-45 win Tuesday against Atchison.

Tonganoxie was held more than 25 points below its season average in a five-point to Jeff West in pool play.
Offense was hard to come by from the opening tip, as the Chieftains (4-4) managed just four points in the opening period. They continued to struggle against the Tigers’ zone defense, but did enough on the other end of the floor to stay within five at halftime, 22-17.
THS, which entered the game averaging 61.6 points per contest, got within two early in the third quarter, but Jeff West never gave up the lead. The Tigers pulled away late, stretching their lead to as many as 12 in the final minutes.
Jack Dale led Tonganoxie with 11 points. Jeff West’s Sean McMahon led all scorers with 12 points, including eight in the second half.
The Chieftains will wrap up pool play at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Eudora. The Cardinals defeated Jeff West in their opener on Monday, 73-60. If THS wins, it will advance to Saturday’s third-place game. If it loses, it will play for fifth.
