THS grads play in Kansas Amateur
Former Tonganoxie High golfers Colby Yates and Drew Sandburg were in action last week and this week at the 104th Kansas Amateur at Mission Hills Country Club.
Both golfers had to qualify for the 64-man, single-elimination bracket during stroke play, which concluded Wednesday. Yates, a 2012 THS grad, made the cut with a two-round score of 143. Sandburg, who graduated in May, followed with a 148.
Match play began with Yates and Sandburg seeded 14th and 41st, respectively. Sandburg lost to Jackson Foth of Lake Quivira in the first round.
Yates beat Gardner’s Jeff George on the first day, then disposed of Topeka’s Brian Walker and Manhattan’s Zac Burton to reach Saturday’s quarterfinal round. His tournament run ended there, though, as he came up short against Doug Albers of Leawood.
Yates will soon begin his junior season at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, while Sandburg will open his college career at Washburn University in Topeka.
