Tonganoxie Public Library expecting big numbers for this year’s 5K race/walk

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jun 9, 2014

The Tonganoxie Public Library’s 5K run/walk during Tonganoxie Days traditionally has been a main moneymaker for the library.

This year’s event could be especially good.

Roughly 200 participants already have signed up with a few days still to spare.

“I think we’re at more than what we’ve had in recent years,” said David Frese, library board chairperson.

What’s more, thanks to donations from local businesses, the library won’t have any costs associated with putting on the race.

All registration fees will benefit the library.

“They’re covering the cost of the race,” Frese said. “Every runner’s fee directly goes to DVDs, books, audio books and materials for children’s reading programs.

“It’s all going to the library, and all the money is staying local.”

Frese said he was impressed with how business owners have stepped up in donating to the cause. He said they even have helped cover fees for some student runners, “which has been awesome,” Frese said.

Online registration ends Tuesday, but interested runners and walkers still can print out forms from the website and take it to the library through the end of the week.

To print out the forms, go to tonganoxielibrary.org.

The race starts and finishes at the Tonganoxie Public Library, Third and Bury streets.

Sign-in and registration starts at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, though participants can sign in and register at the library until 7 p.m. Friday.

Frese is looking forward to the race and is excited about what the library has accomplished in putting this year’s event together.

“Our board members have just busted their tails getting the word out and getting help from the business community,” Frese said.
