Tidal Waves edged by Piper

Lee Roi Johnson won the boys 14 and under freestyle Friday against Piper.

The Tongie Tidal Waves came up just short of a victory in their second meet of the season, but according to coach Janet Falk, improvements could be found up and down the roster.

The Tidal Waves dropped a 219-204 decision to the Piper Piranhas on Friday at Tonganoxie Water Park, but combined for 19 individual championships. The meet featured nearly 220 swimmers between the two teams — an increase of about 20 from Tongie’s season opener against Leavenworth.

“What I did see was, even though there were more kids, kids were more comfortable in the water,” Falk said. “They knew what to do a little bit better because they knew where to do if they needed help. The anxiety went down for several of them.

“(Judges) are looking at the kids and expecting them to be better with their strokes. There were probably just as many DQ’s as the first meet, but the quality of swimming has improved. They’re perfecting their strokes and knowing what to anticipate in each event.”

Emma Stilgenbauer, David Falk, Marisa Kearns and Ellie Jackson each took first place in multiple individual events. Stilgenbauer was the team’s only three-event winner, earning victories in the freestyle, butterfly and backstroke in the 18 and younger division. Stilgenbauer and Falk also teamed up with Lyndon Seitter and Andrew Behm to win the medley relay — one of the team’s seven relay titles.

Because of time constraints caused by the large number of swimmers, some events were combined and all individual medley races were cut. There will be another big crowd this week when Tonganoxie hosts Bonner Springs and Eudora at 8 a.m. Friday, as Bonner will bring about 50 swimmers and Eudora 30.

“We try to be done at 12:30 so they can open up for the general public,” Falk said. “We need to click faster when there are more kids, and that will happen (this) Friday. I really anticipate getting through everything.”
