Colten Weaver and the Tonganoxie K-7 baseball team picked up a 9-7 victory Wednesday at Basehor.
Basehor ? Tonganoxie had Basehor-Linwood’s number throughout the 2014 high school baseball season, going a perfect 4-0 against its Kaw Valley League rival. The towns’ respective summer teams met Wednesday at BLHS, and once again, fortune was on the side of the team in red.
Tonganoxie picked up its first K-7 League win of the season, erasing an early 5-0 deficit in a 9-7 victory.
Basehor (1-3) took a five-run lead while starter Jake Vestal mowed down hitters through the first four innings, but Tonganoxie (1-2) broke through for a six-run fifth inning against reliever Ashton Findley. Three runners scored on errors and Justyn Leslie came home on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Minor, then Travis Woods gave Tonganoxie a 6-5 lead with a two-run double.
Basehor answered with two runs to go back in front in the bottom of the inning, but Tonganoxie provided the knockout blow with three more in the sixth. Ty Hampton scored on an RBI groundout by Colten Weaver, then Minor singled home Logan Woods and scored on a wild pitch.
Tonganoxie finished with seven hits and struck out nine times, but coach Mitch Loomis said the team’s hitting approach is different in the summer than it is during the school season.
“With the summer, all we’re trying to do is get swings,” Loomis said. “I encourage the kids to be very aggressive. That’s not quite the approach we take during the season, but we’re just trying to get as many swings as we can.”
Cody Knight started the game on the mound, striking out two and walking five in two innings of work. Leslie gave up seven hits in three innings of relief, then Travis Woods didn’t allow a hit in the final two frames.
Travis Woods led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
After several postponements, Tonganoxie opened its season Tuesday with back-to-back losses in a doubleheader against Lansing, 4-3 and 8-2. It will be back in action next Tuesday when it host Gardner for a twin bill.
The K-7 season runs through mid-July. Tonganoxie’s roster is mainly comprised of THS players — some of which have yet to see any varsity time — so it gives players and coaches alike the opportunity to fine-tune any areas of their game before the 2015 high school season.
“Not everybody specializes in baseball, so for those kids, it’s huge,” Loomis said. “We can get them out here and get three games a week, so it’s a perfect scenario for those guys. Consistency is what we’re preaching to the kids this summer. They’re finding what they do well, so now we’ve got to use the next nine months of our year to develop it into a habit.”
