THS golfers third at Sunflower Invitational
The Tonganoxie High golf team opened its season Saturday with a third-place finish at the 15th annual Sunflower Invitational in Bonner Springs.
The Chieftains finished with a team score of 388 at Sunflower Hills Golf Course, leaving them 56 strokes behind champion St. James Academy and 40 behind runner-up Lansing. Bonner Springs also fielded a team, while Turner and Bishop Ward had partial squads.
THS senior Drew Sandburg opened the year with a top-five individual finish, coming in third with a score of 78. He was the only Chieftain to medal individually. Fellow senior Nathaniel Laundy just missed the top 10, coming in 11th with a 93.
Freshman Matt Scharff shot a 104 in his first high school tournament, senior Isaac Jones followed with a 113 and sophomore Heath Martin rounded out team THS scoring with a 118.
The Chieftains will have an extended break before their next tournament action at the Mill Valley Invitational on April 9.
