Tonganoxie High senior Jared Sommers earned All-Kaw Valley League first-team selections as a wide receiver and defensive back this fall.

More than 20 Tonganoxie High fall athletes have been recognized for their efforts with selections to this year’s All-Kaw Valley League teams.

A trio of Chieftain football players earned first-team picks after this year’s 2-7 season, in which THS missed the playoffs by just one game. Jared Sommers was named to the first team as a wide receiver and defensive back. The senior captain had a team-high 29 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns, and led the Chieftain defense with 107 total tackles.

Fellow captain Justyn Leslie was named a first-team offensive lineman. The THS offense averaged 94.2 rushing yards per game this season. Kendall Parsons, a first-year player, earned a first-team nod as a defensive lineman. He was second on the team with 77 tackles, including three for negative yardage. Parsons was also an honorable mention kicker after connecting on 9 of 11 extra point attempts.

Ray Munoz, another senior captain, was named to the second team as a linebacker. Two more captains, Greg DeVeau and Ben Clark, were honorable mentions at tight end and offensive line, respectively.

A pair of THS soccer seniors received first-team honors after leading the Chieftains to a 14-4-1 record and a regional title. Asher Huseman, who became the program’s all-time leading scorer this season, was named a first-team forward, while captain Kyle Caldwell earned first-team honors as a defender. THS also had a pair of honorable mentions in sophomore midfielder Logan Williams and junior goalkeeper Alex Kroll.

Sophomore Emily Hummelgaard was the Chieftain volleyball team’s only first-team selection, accomplishing that feat in her first varsity season. Junior Lauren Jackson, a third-year starting setter, was an honorable mention. THS went 16-21 this season.

The top 10 finishers at the Kaw Valley League cross country meet earn first-team selections, finishers 11-20 are second-team picks and 21-25 are honorable mentions. Four THS runners garnered first-team selections after one of the program’s best seasons in recent memory. Emma Campbell and Isabella Behm were named to the girls first team after leading THS to its first regional title since 1990. Meanwhile, individual state qualifiers Ethan Phillips and Drew Cook were named to the boys first team.

Dylan Staatz — another state runner — Brad Andrews, Emily Williams and Mia Bond were second-team picks, while Chandler Hamman, Garrett French and Sophia Wetta earned honorable mentions.
