Weekend planner: Tonganoxie, McLouth homecoming, farm tour, benefit walk
Shawn Linenberger
An American tradition in line with apple pie is on tap locally Friday.
And Saturday, you probably can purchase some fruit at an area event to make that symbolic dessert if you’re in the baking mood.
Here’s a glimpse of what’s on tap for the weekend in the area.
Homecoming time
Our front page lays out many of the activities planned for this week’s homecoming activities. Interestingly enough, McLouth and Tonganoxie are celebrating homecoming the same week.
In my 13 years at The Mirror, I don’t think we’ve had homecoming festivities in the same week for both communities.
Pick a parade if you need some school spirit. Homecoming parades will run through McLouth and Tonganoxie downtowns at 2 p.m. Friday.
McLouth will have some activities the community can take in following the parade at Stan Braksick Sports Complex.
Tonganoxie will celebrate its education foundation’s hall of fame inductees from 3-5 p.m. at the Myers Hotel. Mingle at the reception and then listen to introductions of inductees around 4 p.m.
The inductees again will be recognized during the home football game against Bishop Ward. The game starts at 7 p.m., though homecoming coronation begins at 6:30 p.m.
Hall of fame inductees will be recognized at halftime. If you can’t make it to the afternoon reception, Inductees and family will be at the game.
Civic Club walk
The Tonganoxie Civic Club has done a walk the last few years and has added various elements to it in the process.
Last year, the club sponsored a walk on the Tonganoxie High School campus and partnered with others to put on a health fair at THS.
This year, the walk is being used to promote the proposed Gallagher Park south of Tonganoxie Water Park. The walk will start there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Park planning committee members will be on hand to let folks know more about plans for the park. Donations also will be accepted.
Farm tour
Wineries, orchards (how do you like those apples) and other agribusiness will be on display at this annual event, which always is the first weekend in October. For a complete rundown of participating farms in the area, see page 9. And go to kawvalleyfarmtour.org for more about where to purchase tickets.
Looking ahead
If you didn’t get enough bargains at last week’s citywide garage sale in Tonganoxie, there’s another opportunity.
Linwood Development Corporation is sponsoring a rummage sale 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Oct. 11 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Linwood Community Building, 105 E. Third St. in Linwood.
The sale benefits the community building. Folks also can drop off gently used items between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 if they’d like to help the cause as well.
