Huseman nabs Tonganoxie High career goals record in soccer victory

Tonganoxie High soccer coach Brian Kroll and THS senior Asher Huseman talk on the sideline after Huseman exited the game in the second half. Huseman's two second-half goals Tuesday against Maur Hill-Mount Academy helped him set the new record for career goals at THS.
The soccer field is where Asher Huseman ultimately has belonged all along.
The Tonganoxie High School senior ran cross country his freshman year before switching to soccer for the rest of high school career for the fall season.
It turned out to be a pretty good decision.
Huseman scored two goals during Tuesday’s home finale against Maur Hill, helping him break the school record for career goals in a 6-2 victory against Maur Hill.
Huseman scored his 57th and 58th goals in the second half of Tuesday’s game against Maur Hill-Mount Academy.
It broke the previous record 2013 grad Matt Saathoff set two years ago with 57.
Saathoff set the record after four seasons in a THS uniform, while Huseman is just nearing the end of his third.
Huseman, who has been playing soccer since he was 5, thanked his coaches and teammates for the support in accomplishing the record, though he said he also was glad to be able to contribute with scoring again.
He had gone a few games without a goal.
“It was a relief,” Huseman said about getting the goals and the record.
Tonganoxie actually had a challenge from Maur Hill and the wind in the first half, as the Ravens led, 1-0, about 6 minutes into the game.
THS coach Brian Kroll said he thought the wind was an advantage for the Maur Hill offense in the first half.
The Chieftains kept their passes low, so the running into the wind didn’t seem to bother them offensively, Kroll said.
An overly eager Chieftain squad was whistled for several offside penalties in the first half, which hindered a slew of potential scores.
Still, THS junior forward Tyler Novotney scored an equalizer in the 26th minute. He added another with 23.9 seconds left in the first half and the Chieftains had a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Asher’s younger brother and freshman midfielder Gad Huseman tacked on another goal to Asher’s two second-half goals, as did sophomore midfielder Jay Willcutt.
The Ravens had a second-half goal as well, but it wasn’t enough.
Overall, Kroll was pleased with his team’s performance and proud of Huseman’s accomplishment.
“It’s amazing he could do it in three seasons,” Kroll said.
THS pushed its win streak to seven games Thursday with a 2-1 win at Bishop Ward. The Cyclones gave the Chieftains an early advantage with an own-goal, then Dawson Jones scored off an assist from Huseman.
After a week off, THS (11-3-1) will wrap up its regular season schedule next Thursday at Leavenworth-Immaculata. It defeated the Raiders twice last season, once in regional play.
