Perry ? After seeing its share of ups and downs in 2014, the Tonganoxie High volleyball team has seemingly found a groove at the right time.
THS picked up a pair of wins Monday, sweeping a triangular at Big Seven school Perry-Lecompton. The Chieftains (16-19) opened with a three-set victory against host school PLHS, 24-26, 25-18, 25-15, then swept Bishop Seabury Academy, 25-18, 25-17.
Coach Tiffany Parker’s squad has now put together a three-match win streak, which started with a sweep of Bishop Ward on Oct. 14 in Kansas City, Kan.
“Whenever you get some wins, it just builds confidence and trust in your teammates,” Parker said. “We’re starting to see some of that happening. That’s exciting heading into the week of sub-state.”
In its opener against the Kaws, THS found itself in an 11-11 tie midway through the first set. The Chieftains answered with a 5-1 run, but Perry scored the next three points and never allowed THS to pull away. The Kaws later used an 8-2 burst to grab the set.
The seesaw battle continued into the second set, which also saw an 11-11 stalemate. This time, though, the Chieftains took control. They scored six of the next seven points and didn’t give PLHS an opportunity to mount a comeback down the stretch. They used a similar run in the third set, breaking an 8-8 tie with a 10-3 run to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
An early 6-1 lead set the tone against Seabury, as THS never allowed the Seahawks the chance to take control in either set. The Chieftains turned the hot start into a 19-10 lead and cruised for the rest of the first set, then opened the second on a 13-3 surge to keep the momentum in their favor. Seabury scored six straight points late in the final set, but never got closer than four points.
THS will wrap up its regular seasons schedule Tuesday when it hosts Bonner Springs on Tuesday for senior night. The match will mark the final home action for Summer Cerny and Jessica Minear. Cerny joined the team this season after transferring from McLouth, while Minear joined the varsity squad late last season.
“Bonner is a good team, and we know they’re going to be well coached and they’ve got great athletes, so we just need to do our best to match up,” Parker said. “I know that our seniors are going to want to play well on senior night, so I’m excited to see how they come out and compete.”
The freshman match is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the junior varsity and varsity matches will immediately follow. After Tuesday’s match, Tonganoxie will await its Class 4A-I sub-state seed, which will be revealed Wednesday by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. The Chieftains’ sub-state will be Saturday in De Soto. The field includes host school DHS, Basehor-Linwood and Eudora.
