Drew Cook helped the Tonganoxie boys cross country team to a second-place finish at last week's KVL meet.

? The Tonganoxie High cross country teams got their final tuneup before regionals last week, and they did so at the same spot they’ll try to secure a trip to state this weekend.

The Chieftain boys took second and the girls fourth at the Kaw Valley League meet Thursday at Wyandotte County Park.

Two runners earned top-10 individual finishes on the boys side. Ethan Philips came in third with a time of 17 minutes, 55.8 seconds, while Drew Cook (18:15.27) took seventh. Brad Andrews (13th) and Dylan Staatz (18th) were next, while Chandler Hamman (21st) and Garrett French (22nd) finished just outside the top 20. Justin Patrick (30th) rounded out the team’s day.

“I’ve been happy with the boys all season long,” coach John Tollefson said. “I can’t take credit for what has happened with that team. They just came into the season with that goal of being state-bound in their heads. They’ve worked hard as a group.”

The Chieftains finished with 57 team points, coming in 37 behind team champ and class 5A Mill Valley. The Jaguars had three of the top four individual finishers and six of the top 10.

Emma Campbell enjoyed a career day in the girls race, placing second overall in 16:19.72. Isabella Behm (16:53.55) joined Campbell in the top 10 with a ninth-place effort. Emily Williams (19th) and Mia Bond (20th) finished just inside the top 20, followed by Sophia Wetta (22nd), Tressa Walker (28th) and Hope Creten (29th). The girls were without regular varsity runner Emily Chambers, but she will return for this week’s regional race.

THS came in 10 points behind third-place Basehor-Linwood with 72 points. Mill Valley (49 points) edged out Lansing for the team title by just eight points. The Chieftains have defeated BLHS twice this season, so Tollefson is hopeful the league loss will provide some extra motivation this weekend.

“That’s kind of been our focus,” he said. “We beat them once at Perry by just a few points at we beat them again at P-Ridge by a greater margin. We were down a runner and they got us by 10 points. I’m going to make a point to the girls that we can’t let (a loss) happen again at regionals.”

The Chieftains will return to WyCo Park for their Class 4A regional meet, which begins with the girls race at 2 p.m. Saturday. The boys race is set for 3 p.m. The top three teams will advance to the state meet Nov. 1 in Wamego, as well as the top five individual runners not on a qualifying team.

The tournament field is comprised of THS, host school Basehor-Linwood, Atchison, Bishop Miege, Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, De Soto, Holton, Jeff West, Perry-Lecompton, Piper, Rock Creek, Royal Valley, Sumner Academy, Topeka-Hayden and Wamego.

“We’ve just basically taken two good teams (Mill Valley and Lansing) and replaced them with with a few other good teams,” Tollefson said. “I don’t look at it as a new experience for us. If we can shave a little bit off everybody’s time, I think we’re going to be right where we want to be.”
