Bulldogs’ playoff chances still alive
McLouth High’s potential road to the Class 3A playoffs has some interesting twists as the Bulldogs enter their final game of the regular season.
The Bulldogs, 24-12 winners last week at Atchison County Community High School, are currently 1-1 in 3A district 3. They dropped a 20-14 decision to Pleasant Ridge in their district opener on Oct. 17.
Maur Hill (2-0) leads the district, followed by MHS, PRHS (1-1) and ACCHS (0-2), but no teams have been eliminated from playoff contention.
McLouth (4-4 overall) will wrap up its district slate Friday at Maur Hill, while Pleasant Ridge will travel to ACCHS. The district champion will host the loser of this week’s district 4 game between Silver Lake and Rossville in the first round of the playoffs, while the district 3 runner-up will play at the district 4 champion.
Here is a look at playoff scenarios for all possible outcomes.
If McLouth and Pleasant Ridge win
If the Bulldogs and Rams both win Friday, it will force a three-way tie with Maur Hill atop the district standings. Since no team would have a 2-0 record against the other two, district points would come into play.
Maur Hill is currently plus-29 and McLouth is plus-6, while Pleasant Ridge is minus-6 and ACCHS is minus-29. Teams can add or lose as many as 21 points this week. The team with the most points would be the district champ, while the team with the second-most would be the runner-up.
If McLouth and ACCHS win
A Bulldog victory and Pleasant Ridge loss would give McLouth an outright district title because MHS would have a head-to-head win against Maur Hill. The Ravens would be the district runner-up since both other district teams would have two losses.
If Maur Hill and Pleasant Ridge win
Maur Hill, the only district team to directly control its own destiny, can go 3-0 and win the district outright with a win against the Bulldogs. If Pleasant Ridge also wins, it will be the district runner-up at 2-1.
If Maur Hill and ACCHS win
Wins by Maur Hill and ACCHS would drop both McLouth and Pleasant Ridge to 1-2 in district play, forcing a three-way tie for the second playoff spot. In that situation, district points would be used to decide the runner-up.
