The Tonganoxie soccer team won a regional title Tuesday, defeating Kansas City Christian in triple overtime.

Since the first day of practice, Tonganoxie High soccer coach Brian Kroll has preached the importance of composure. When Logan Williams got the ball in front of an empty goal on Tuesday, he stayed composed just long enough to tap it into the net.

Once the shot went in, though, Williams and his teammates were composed no more.

Williams’ goal, which came in the third overtime period, powered THS to a 1-0 win in a Class 4-1A regional final against Kansas City Christian.

After going more than 100 minutes without a score, the Chieftains (14-3-1) got a chance with about three minutes left in a five-minute, sudden-death overtime period. Brandon Williams fired a shot toward the KCC goal. Panther goalkeeper Bryce Johnston knocked the ball away, but it bounced straight to Logan Williams with Johnston out of the net.

The Chieftain sophomore punched in his eighth goal of the season with 2:55 left, and the celebration was on.

“I was just thinking ‘don’t put it over,'” Logan Williams said. “It’s unbelievable. I just don’t have any other words to describe it right now.”

The regional title is the team’s third in four years. The Chieftains have now won 10 games in a row — a span that includes five shutouts.

After a first half full of missed opportunities by both sides, THS played into a stiff wind in the second. It got one of its best chances to take the lead about nine minutes in when Tyler Novotney took the ball down the right side of the field with teammate Asher Huseman wide open to his left, but Novotney couldn’t get a pass off before the defense caught up.

The Panthers (9-8-1) spent most of the period near the Chieftain goal, but couldn’t crack a defense led by goalkeeper Alex Kroll and senior captain Kyle Caldwell. The defense thwarted several corner kicks and never allowed KCC an open shot attempt.

“You need to go in like a wrecking ball,” Brian Kroll said of the defense. “If somebody bodies up, you’re bigger. Use your momentum. They just owned the defensive line and Alex controlled them. It was really, really good all the way around. Everybody did their part.”

The Chieftains had the wind at their backs for the first overtime and nearly won it on a shot by Huseman about three minutes in, but Johnston got to the ball just before it crossed the goal line. Garrett Martin got a look with 2:36 left in the first overtime, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. The teams traded directions for the second overtime, and the defense came up with several more stops to set up the game-winner.

With the win, THS advances to the 4-1A state quarterfinals. The Chieftains are the No. 2 seed in the northeast bracket and will host No. 3 Bishop Miege (12-4-2) at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will earn a spot in the state semifinals, set for Nov. 7 in Bonner Springs.

“Hopefully, they believe now that they belong here, they deserve it and they’re capable of doing it,” said Brian Kroll, whose team is trying to make its second state title game appearance since 2012.

Miege survived an upset bid by Basehor-Linwood on Thursday, winning in penalty kicks. Baldwin will play De Soto in the other northeast quarterfinal game.
