A former fire department chief is to appear next month in Leavenworth County District Court on a charge he took more than $14,000 from his township.

Jeff H. Theno, of Basehor, faces one count felony theft. The former Fairmount Township Fire Department chief is accused of stealing $14,258 from the township from March 5 to May 1, 2013, according to Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

Theno stepped down as chief and retired from the department July 29, said Chuck Magaha, who was appointed the township’s new fire chief Aug. 7.

Magaha said Theno had been fire chief for more than 10 years.

Theno is scheduled to next appear in court Oct. 3, Thompson said.

The township’s former assistant chief, Magaha has been with the volunteer fire department for 38 years and is the county’s emergency management director. He’s been with that department 25 years.
