Courtney leads charge as McLouth blanks Immac
In McLouth High’s opening game, Jack Courtney powered the Bulldogs to a win with his arm. Last week, he did it with his legs.
Courtney ran for three touchdowns in a 42-0 victory Friday at Leavenworth-Immaculata. MHS (2-0) jumped out to a 26-0 lead at halftime and didn’t allow the undermanned Raiders (0-2) to mount any sort of comeback after the break.
Courtney, who threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ season opener against Jefferson County North, scored on runs of two and six yards in the first quarter. Jace Carlton added a four-yard score in the second, then Courtney hit Jack Arnett on a 29-yard touchdown pass to close out first-half scoring.
The Bulldogs ran at will against the Raiders, who started the game with just 11 players. Carlton and Courtney combined for 200 yards on just 22 carries.
“Our kids did a great job of blocking in the run game,” coach Chris Stewart said. “They did a pretty good job of blitzing us, so we weren’t as successful throwing the ball as we’d have liked. This past week, we didn’t do as well blocking for him, but his run game has been very good, so I’m very satisfied with that.”
Courtney added a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter, then Kevin Gann capped off scoring on a 14-yard run later in the period. In addition to Courtney and Carlton, Stewart said Arnett and Kevin Gann continued to show improvement on offense.
Defensively, McLouth pitched its first shutout of the season and its sixth since the start of the 2011 season. The Bulldogs have allowed just six points through two games in 2014.
“I think we’re doing a really good job of containing the run game,” Stewart said. “When we played JCN that first game, I thought they did a good job passing. Immac tried to throw, but coverage-wise, we were there to defend it. We’re getting to where we want to be.”
With the victory, MHS extended its win streak against the Raiders to eight games. During that stretch, which began in 2005, the Bulldogs have outscored the Raiders by a 317-49 margin, including three shutouts.
Stewart’s squad will try to improve to 3-0 this week when it hosts Jackson Heights at 7 p.m. Friday at Stan Braksick Sports Complex. The Bulldogs won their last meeting with the Cobras, 42-8, in the first round of the 2012 playoffs.
“This week, I think we’ll be able to distribute the ball to a lot of guys,” Stewart said. “From what I’ve seen, we should be able to run the ball pretty well.”
