Face to Face: Tonganoxie High School’s Kelly Fredley

By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 23, 2014

Name: Kelly Fredley

Family: Father, Joe, mechanical engineer at Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pa.; mother, Debbie, retired high school faculty in State College, Pa.; older sister, Jamie Brennan, social studies teacher in State College, Pa.; older brother, Jon, a civil engineer in Newfoundland; younger sister Tracy, a lawyer in Lawrence; and Fredley’s cat, Little Girl.

Occupation: High school counselor at Tonganoxie High School.

Interesting fact: Fredley is a self-proclaimed professional Mario World 3 video game player.

“I can beat it in probably a half-hour’s time,” Fredley said, later admitting she hadn’t played the game in some time.

Digging deeper: Fredley graduated from State College Area High School in 2003. She earned her bachelor’s in marketing and master’s in school counseling from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

An insurance agent at one point, Fredley pursued a degree in counseling.

“I wanted to work with students and one of the best ways to do that was through the counseling process,” Fredley said. “That one-on-one contact with students, getting to know them personally, getting to know their families.

“Plus, I get to help people. I really want to help make people’s lives better.”

Fredley moved to Florida for counseling positions, two years at the high school level and the third at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., as an academic coach.

“I didn’t transition well to the Florida style of living,” she said. “Red-headed freckle girl with pale skin is not conducive to the sun down there.”

Fredley is the new announcer for THS home soccer games. She also is revamping Students Against Destructive Decisions with support from Transforming Tonganoxie Together.

In her spare time, Fredley plays on a co-ed soccer team in Lawrence with her sister. She also enjoys disc golf and regular golf when she can on weekends — when she’s not watching Penn State football.

“Pizza is by far my favorite food,” Fredley said. “And bagels are probably second.”
