The Tonganoxie High cross country team got one opportunity to run in front of a home crowd this season, and the Chieftains couldn’t have hoped for a much better result.

Both THS teams were victorious on their new home course Tuesday, sweeping the team titles at the Tonganoxie Invitational.

The girls and boys teams won with identical scores of 20 points at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. The meet has taken place near Tonganoxie Middle School in recent years, but was moved this season because of the construction of the new elementary school.

“I didn’t hear any complaints,” coach John Tollefson said of the new course. “Nothing about it being too difficult or too easy, so I was quite pleased with how it was received.”

An individual title by freshman Emma Campbell powered the THS girls to the team title. Campbell won a goal medal, setting the inaugural record with a time of 16 minutes, 14 seconds, and was one of six Chieftains to finish in the top 10.

The first-place finish was the first for Campbell, who also ran in the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in August.

“It’s pretty awesome because I got to set the record,” Campbell said. “Our team did really great. We keep up with each other and we compete with each other in practice. We have 10 great runners and we’re all fighting for a varsity spot, so I think that really pushes us.”

Other top-10 finishers were Isabella Behm (third), Emily Chambers (fourth), Emily Williams (fifth), Hope Creten (seventh) and Tressa Walker (eighth). Nicole Zerrer rounded out the team’s day with a 14th-place finish. The girls easily beat out runner-up Manhattan by 30 points.

The THS boys claimed five of the top six spots to win the team championship. Manhattan’s Isaiah Koppes was the individual champ (17:26), but Drew Cook, Ethan Phillips, Brad Andrews, Dylan Staatz and Garrett French finished second through sixth, respectively.

The Chieftains’ top five finishers stayed relative close from start to finish, as each crossed the finish line in a span of just 1:14.

“I just think it’s awesome that we all stayed within like a minute of each other,” said Cook, who led the team with a time of 17:41. “We just always know that it’s a team effort. It’s not individual goals. We’re always trying to get first as a team.”

Chandler Hamman also finished 12th and Justin Patrick 18th for the Chieftains, who defeated MHS by 26 points.

THS will be back in action close to home this weekend when it runs in the Rim Rock Farm Classic in Lawrence. Both teams will run in the blue division. The boys race is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the girls race will immediately follow.
