Cheyenne Ford and the Tonganoxie High volleyball team will open their annual home tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The Tonganoxie High volleyball team will cap off its busy week Saturday when it welcomes nine teams to town for the annual Tonganoxie Invitational.

This year’s tournament field is comprised of THS, Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, Eudora, Garden City, Gardner-Edgerton, Great Bend, Ottawa, Piper and Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The field is broken into two five-team pools. Tonganoxie is in Pool A alongside Gardner, Ottawa, Ward and Great Bend and will play its pool play matches in the east gymnasium. The five remaining teams are in Pool B and will play in the west gym.

There are five rounds of pool play matches beginning at 8 a.m. Each team will have one round off. There will be a 20-minute break at the end of the third round and a 30-minute lunch break at the end of the fifth round. Pool play matches will run ahead of schedule if possible.

The bracket schedule is set to begin at 2 p.m. Fifth-place finishers from each pool will play in the west gym, while fourth-place finishers and third-place finishers will play in the east gym.

When those rounds are concluded, the Pool A champion will play the Pool B runner-up and vice versa to decide the championship and consolation final matchups. Both finals round matches are set for 4 p.m.

The Chieftains will try to improve on last year’s tournament performance, in which they went 2-3 and finished sixth. There will be a new tournament champion this season, as 2013 champ Olathe East is absent from the field. OEHS defeated Great Bend in the championship match a year go.
