What made you decide to run for office?
A few members of the community asked me to run for School Board. It was after careful consideration, that I decided that I would be willing to put the time and energy into this position.
Why? Hattie, fifth grade; Remi, fourth grade; Kasia, third grade; and Kalea, first grade. My four children will all attend the USD 464 School District and graduate from Tonganoxie High School. Therefore, I have a vested interest in helping our school district provide the best educational experience possible, not only for our family, but also for our friends and our entire community.
Great schools stimulate local economy, school spirit and community pride. In order to retain the current businesses, jobs and residents — and, attract new ones — it is essential to have a top-tier school district. I was lucky enough to graduate from a top-tier school district, Decorah Community School District in Decorah, Iowa. I am proud of my education and hometown. It is my hope that every Tonganoxie High School graduate shares that same sense of pride.
What special qualifications would you bring to this office?
I received this text recently: “Your honesty and the fearless way you confront problems is not only a part of what makes you a great person — but what sets you apart in this race.”
Not only am I grateful for these kind words, I wear them as a badge of honor.
I am not afraid to ask the hard questions, to research and to debate. The only way the school board can make good decisions collectively is to discuss each and every issue — keeping the children first in each and every discussion and decision.
I will bring leadership, energy and youthful enthusiasm to the school board.
What are the three most important issues facing the school district and how would you address them?
The three most important issues facing the school district are:
-
Communication (gaining community trust and boosting employee morale)
-
Fiscal challenges (adapting to block funding)
-
Academic excellence (meeting the diverse educational needs of our students)
For each and every issue that I am faced with as a member of the school board, I will seek out public opinion and use that information combined with the facts that I learn from the school board to make the best decisions for the school and the community.
