The Tonganoxie High girls and boys basketball teams will look to make fresh starts in 2016.

The THS girls team nearly cracked the win column against BLHS, but the Bobcats eventually pulled away for the 55-47 win.

On the boys side, the Basehor-Linwood team showed its state powerhouse prowess in a 55-28 victory.

Those games followed up Tonganoxie’s first home competition of the season Dec. 15.

The THS girls fell to Bonner Springs, 43-24, while the boys lost in their home opener, 56-34. The Chieftain boys were tied at 18 heading into the second quarter against Bonner Springs, but BSHS eventually pulled away.

In the Tonganoxie girls game against Basehor-Linwood, THS had the lead after three quarters. The Chieftains led, 11-5, after the first quarter and 24-21 heading into the break. Both teams scored 9 points in third quarter, so THS still had the 33-30 advantage heading into the final quarter.

That’s when the Bobcats kicked it into high gear. BLHS scored 25 in the final quarter on the way to the Kaw Valley League victory.

Taylor Lee led THS scorers with 12 points, while Cheyenne Ford also scored in double figures with 11. Kaitlin Hall chipped in 9 and Lauren Willson 7 in the victory.

Tonganoxie was hot from beyond the arc, going 4-for-5 from three-point land. The team shot 48 percent overall (13-for-27). The team struggled from the free-throw line, connecting on 17 of 45 free throws for 38 percent.

Tonganoxie teams resume the season after winter break with Jan. 5 home games against Piper.
