Face to Face: Tonganoxie’s Toni Minor

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 22, 2015

Name: Toni Minor

Born: Kansas City, Kan.

Family: Husband, Thomas; children, Dee, New York City, Thomas, Gladstone, Mo., Terri, Houston, and Summer, State College, Pa.

Occupation: Psychologist

Dream job as a child: Minor wanted to be a nurse when she was younger.

Interesting fact: Her father was born in Cuba.

Digging deeper: A 1976 Sumner Academy graduate, Minor went to the University of Oklahoma on a partial scholarship. She played right field for the OU softball team.

“It kept me out of trouble,” Minor said with a laugh.

She actually started her career in nursing, as she earned a bachelor’s degree in the field from OU.

She was in nursing about 20 years and then earned master’s and doctorate degrees from Kansas University in psychology.

Her husband originally is from Kansas City, Kan., as well, but they actually met while she was attending college in Norman, Okla. He was working as a military recruiter.

They eventually got married and started raising a family in KCK before moving to rural Tonganoxie some 29 years ago.

Minor said she likes to exercise in her free time and also is in a book club. She said there are 12 members in the club. Members rotate picking books from the bestseller’s list. There are attorneys, nurses, teachers, caregivers and housekeepers in class — and plenty of both Republicans and Democrats.

“It’s a very eclectic group,” Minor said. “It’s a fun group.”

The Minors will be going on 30 years in the Tonganoxie area later this year.

Minor said the Tonganoxie area has become a more accepting place as time has gone by. She also said she appreciates the rural landscape around the community.
