Tonganoxie soccer drops heartbreaker in regionals

By Shawn Linenberger - | Nov 3, 2015

It was a great start for the Tonganoxie High soccer team in its Class 4-1A regional playoff game Oct. 27 at Chieftain Park.

THS, the No. 5 seed in the northeast regional, led No. 8 Kansas City Christian, 2-0, in the first half.

The Panthers, though, responded with three unanswered goals. KCC won the match, 3-2, ending one of Tonganoxie’s more successful seasons in school history. Tonganoxie finished the season, 12-5, while KC Christian improved to 8-7-2 with the victory. The team then blanked Maur Hill Mount Academy (13-2-1) by a 3-0 score in Atchison. KC Christian played De Soto (16-2) in a northeast regional quarterfinal, while Spring Hill (15-3) and Bishop Miege (14-3-1) play in the other quarterfinal on Tuesday. Rose Hill (17-0-1) and Louisburg (7-10-2) play in a south central regional quarterfinal and Winfield (14-3-1) against Wichita Trinity Academy (12-4-2) in the other regional quarterfinal.

Winners of those four games will play in the regional finals. The top four teams play at state Friday and Saturday at Towanda-Circle.

Rose Hill will look to win its second consecutive Class 4-1A state title. The Rockets won state last year at David Jaynes Stadium in Bonner Springs.

Seniors on this year’s THS team were Noah Arthaud, Sonny Mangelsdorf, Spencer Finkbiner, Dawson Jones, Tyler Novotney and Alex Kroll.
