McLouth BBQ, Basehor Dairy Days coming

McLouth and Basehor will be having two of their bigger festivals this weekend.

In McLouth, the 25th annual McLouth BBQ Blowout will be Friday and Saturday, while the 11th annual Basehor Dairy Days is Saturday. Here’s a closer look at both festivals:

McLouth BBQ Blowout

McLouth’s 25th Anniversary BBQ Blowout is Friday and Saturday at Prairie Park.

The barbecue contest is one of the top competitions in the area. It’s known as the Northeast Kansas State Championship and is a KC Barbecue Society sanctioned event. McLouth Recreation Commission is sponsoring the festivities, which will be west of the Stan Braksick Sports Complex in Prairie Park. is Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4, in Prairie Park, on the west side.

People attending the event can visit with barbecue teams competing for trophies and prize money. Cookers are encouraged to have samples for the People’s Choice Award. Grand Champion qualifies for the American Royal BBQ Championship and the Jack Daniel’s BBQ.

Other activities planned are:

• Exotic animal petting zoo and petting rides, 6-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

• Kiwanis Country Breakfast, 7 a.m. Saturday. People will be serving homemade pancakes and biscuits and gravy.

• A classic car, truck, motorcycle and tractor display will be take place, with special parking available. Anyone participating should arrived by 10 a.m. if possible. For more information, contact Dan Holwick at 913-634-5267.

• Jefferson County Area Chamber of Commerce Backyard BBQ Championship, Saturday. Come test your skill in the backyard BBQ division: Entry Fee is $25. Call 913-796-6330 for info and an entry form.

• An obstacle course and moon walk with slide will complement the petting zoo and pony rides.

• Other activities and food opportunities are the 4-H Pie and Ice Cream Booth, firefighter demonstrations and water fights and Jayhawk Model Masters RC Airplane Club demonstrations.

• Concessions, including snow cones and funnel cakes, face painters and more than 20 vendors, including homemade soap and crafts.

Many garage sales in and around McLouth also are planned for Friday and Saturday.

Basehor Dairy Days

Basehor will have its celebration starting with the Crazy Cow 5K Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m.

This year’s event will be in the Basehor-Linwood High School parking lot.

A Chris Cakes Pancake Breakfast will run 7:30-10:30 a.m., while John and the Bobbins Concert will be 10 a.m.-noon.

White Tiger Martial Arts is set to perform from 10-11 a.m., while the Shriner’s Clowns will create balloon characters. A Sarah’s Studio of Dance performance starts at noon and an Elvis impersonator will be in the building from 12:30-1:30 p.m.,, T-Bones mascot Sizzle from 1-3 p.m. and the Junior Bobcat Cheer group at 1:15 p.m.

Thunder Beatz performs from 1:30-2 p.m. and the Just Another Band concert, sponsored by the Basehor Chamber of Commerce, plays from 2-4 p.m.

Other activities and things to take in from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. are the free Kansas Lions Mobile Health Screening Unit, which also will be at the Tonganoxie Sesquicentennial the next Saturday, inflatables, a pet tin zoo and face painting. Craft vendors will complement the various food items that will be available, including cheesecake on a stick, Philly cheese steaks and root beer floats.
