Tonganoxie High soccer gets through hectic week unscathed

By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 27, 2016

Tonganoxie High looked ready to put the cherry atop a big week of soccer Friday at the Chieftain Park Sports Complex. THS had gone 3-0 so far and was playing its fourth match in five days. It led Maranatha Academy, 2-0, in the second half, but a penalty kick and another goal from the Eagles provided the equalizer with 3:04 left in regulation.

THS coach Brian Kroll had some choice words for his team before the first overtime, but he was jubilant about 25 minutes later. After no score in the first 10-minute overtime, THS was about get its first tie of the season in the second overtime when Maranatha was called for a handball in the box just as time was expiring.

Captain Logan Williams, who connected on a penalty kick in the first half, repeated the feat in the second overtime and then celebrated with his teammates after the unlikeliest of scenarios.

Minutes after the match finished and Kroll had celebrated with his team, he reflected on the game that moved THS to 4-0 for the week and 8-1 overall.

“I’ll take it,” he said with a smile.

James Breedlove score just a few minutes into the game at the 37:21 mark and THS had a 1-0 lead. Williams added the penalty kick shot with 19:57 left in the first half.

Earlier in the week, THS defeated Eudora, 6-2, on Sept. 19, Baldwin, 2-1, in overtime on Sept. 20 in Baldwin City and St. Mary’s Academy, 3-0 on Thursday at St. Marys.

Against Eudora, THS Williams scored twice, Zeb Huseman twice, Gage Sommer once and Gad Huseman once. Against BHS, Logan Williams scored on a penalty kick and then Gad Huseman scored the game winner in OT with a header. In the SMA match, Bowan Jones scored twice and Logan Williams once.

Tonganoxie played Louisburg on Tuesday after The Mirror’s deadline. The team also plays at 4 p.m. Thursday in Shawnee against Kansas City Christian and at 6 p.m. Monday against Lansing at home.

“Our defensive third is solid, our midfield is solid with the exception of our recovery,” Kroll said. “Our other third is good, but we can’t finish.”
