Paola Panthers

Tonganoxie and Paola have battled often in recent years with some pretty

exciting tussles among those meetings. This year should provide another solid matchup with both squads entering the game with identical marks.

Records: Tonganoxie: 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Frontier League play; Paola is 2-1 and 2-1.

Last week: THS won its homecoming, 40-15, against Lansing; Paola lost on the road to Ottawa, 40-7.

Coaches: Paola’s Mike Smith is in his fourth year as PHS head coach. He has a record of 10-20. Tonganoxie’s Preston Troyer is in his fourth year at Tonganoxie as head coach, but it’s his 13th overall at THS after serving a decade as an assistant under his father, Al Troyer. Preston is 23-13 as head coach. Tonganoxie went 63-37 during Preston’s time as an assistant.

Trends: Tonganoxie and Paola played consistently from 1968-82 when they both were members of the Frontier League the first time. Tonganoxie joined the league again in 2018 after the Kaw Valley League disbanded. Tonganoxie has won four straight against Paola, all of which have been regular season games the last four years.

This and that: The Frontier League race got more interesting last week after Eudora knocked off Spring Hill, 24-14, at EHS. Ottawa is now the lone undefeated team in the conference at 3-0 overall, but both Eudora and Ottawa are undefeated in league play. The Cardinals and Cyclones meet tonight in Eudora.
