Tonganoxie City Council Chambers are moving to the former public library at Third and Bury streets. In-person meetings also available for viewing on a city YouTube Channel could start with the Jan. 19 regular meeting.

Any Tonganoxie resident interested in applying for appointment on the City Council has until 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning to submit paperwork.

The appointment will fulfill the unexpired term of Loralee Stevens, who recently stepped down from her position on the council.

Stevens was first elected to the council in 2017. She was elected again in 2021 and most recently this past November for a third time. She told The Mirror last week it was an honor to serve on the council, but was ready to leave the governing body.

“It is time for someone with fresh eyes and ideas to step in and make an impact,” she said. “I am grateful for the opportunity and now look forward to enjoying retirement.”

Stevens’ term expires in January 2030.

An appointment to the City Council is made by the mayor with the consent of the majority of the City Council. Typically applicants are given the chance to present their interest in the position at a meeting of the City Council before an appointment recommendation is made by the Mayor.

The application form can be found at tonganoxie.org. Anyone with questions can call City Hall at 913-845-2620.
