The Leavenworth County Justice Center at 601 S. Third St., LeavenworthA 65-year-old Lansing man has been convicted of murdering a neighbor.
Following a three-day jury trial that concluded Wednesday, May 13, Dennis J. Brockenshire was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated burglary. Brockenshire previously pleaded not guilty to the charges in December 2025, per a release from the office of Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
On June 28, 2025, Lansing police officers responded to a mobile home community near North Main Street and Helen Street on a report of a possible fatality involving a gunshot wound.
While making contact with the reporting party, officers observed damage to the front door of the home and a shoe print that appeared to indicate forced entry into the residence.
Once inside, officers found the victim on a couch with no pulse and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Leavenworth County EMS and the Lansing Fire Department also confirmed the victim was deceased, the release said.
Based on statements from neighbors at the scene, Brockenshire was identified as a possible suspect.
During the investigation, Lansing police also gathered evidence connecting Brockenshire to the crime, including:
Statements from neighbors indicating Brockenshire made comments prior to June 28, 2025, about kicking in the victim’s door and shooting him:
• Ammunition collected at the scene that matched ammunition found in Brockenshire’s closet.
• A lab report indicating a positive result for gunshot residue on Brockenshire’s hands.
• A lab report indicating a positive result for gunshot residue on Brockenshire’s T-shirt, which investigators confirmed he was wearing on the day of the murder.
• A lab report indicating blood discovered on Brockenshire’s T-shirt was consistent with the victim’s known DNA profile.
“In a tragedy that shook a neighborhood, the truth was pieced together with the help of other neighbors and the careful work of law enforcement,” Thompson said. “Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and friends.”
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. July 10.
