The accident occurred about 9:15 p.m. Monday between 206th Street and South Park on State Avenue (U.S. Highway 24-40).

Once on scene, Leavenworth County Sheriff’s officers determined that a 39-year-old Lawrence woman was driving a 1997 Toyota Camry the wrong way west in the eastbound lane when the vehicle collided with a 2021 Nissan Murano driven by a 29-year-old Kansas City, Kan., woman. Both vehicles collided head on and never left the No. 1 lane in the two eastbound lanes.

The Lawrence woman was dead when officers arrived. The KCK woman was taken to University of Kansas hospital by Leavenworth County EMS.

Air bags deployed in both vehicles, reports said. Law enforcement officials are investigating whether possible impairment led to the accident.
