A Kansas City, Missouri, man has been charged with human trafficking for allegedly flying a child to Lawrence for sex in 2022.

The man, Yahir De Jesus Van Vollenhoven, 25, is charged in Douglas County District Court with one felony count of aggravated human trafficking. The incident is alleged to have occurred on July 14, 2022. The age of the child is not listed in the charging document. Van Vollenhoven faces a minimum of 12 years in prison if convicted.

The investigation into the alleged crime began in 2022 and concluded in October of 2023. Police believe that Van Vollenhoven flew a juvenile into Lawrence from another state for sex, said Laura McCabe with the Lawrence Police Department.

Court records show that Van Vollenhoven was first arrested in connection with the charge in Jackson County, Missouri, in January before he was extradited to Kansas on Feb. 7. He was released on a $10,000 surety bond shortly after arriving at the Douglas County Jail, according to the jail booking log.

Van Vollenhoven is next scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 28 for a status conference.
