A Leavenworth County Jail inmate has been sentenced to prison for attacking another inmate earlier this year, according to a release from the office of Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

Christian M. Harris, 21, was sentenced Friday to 23 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to an aggravated battery charge.

The incident occurred Jan. 27 inside the Leavenworth County Jail. Surveillance video showed Harris approach the victim and begin striking him repeatedly with his fists. When the victim attempted to retreat into his cell, Harris blocked the doorway and continued hitting him in the face. The attack only stopped when a Leavenworth County deputy entered the pod.

The assault left the victim with a gash on his head, with blood visible on both the victim and the floor.

“This kind of violent behavior cannot be tolerated, especially inside a correctional facility,” Thompson said. “Everyone deserves to be safe, even when in jail.”
