Tonganoxie High School will once again honor local veterans with this year’s Veterans Day celebration on Monday.

The event will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Chieftain Arena on the THS campus. Veterans are invited to attend the program, which is taking place the day before the federal holiday. There will be five Quilts of Valor presented during the event. This year’s honorees are Edward “Eddie” Everitt Peel, U.S. Army; Jerry Pruitt, U.S. Air Force; Clarence H. “Chip” Marquardt Jr., U.S. Navy; and Julie Deason, U.S. Army; and Dan Schmidt, U.S. Air Force.

THS band and vocal departments will perform during the assembly, while USD 464 teacher Jaime Fahlgren will be the speaker.

This year’s event also will include a dedication for the late Larry Meadows, a veteran and avid member of Tonganoxie VFW Post 9271 who volunteered greatly in the community.

On Tuesday, the oldest Veterans Day parade in the nation will take place. The Leavenworth County Veterans Day parade, which dates back 106 years, will start at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Leavenworth.
