Tonganoxie High boys soccer entered the final week of the regular season riding a four-match winning streak.
THS followed up its Oct. 14 overtime victory against Basehor-Linwood with a 1-0 OT victory Thursday at Paola. Cody Lobb got the overtime goal with thea Sylas Lungu assist.
The victories moved Tonganoxie to 7-5-2 on the season. The matchers marked the team’s fourth and fifth overtime contests on the season. Overall, the squad is 2-1-2 in matches that didn’t end in regulation.
THS found its golden goal on a bang-bang play with less than a minute to go in the first overtime against Basehor-Linwood.
With 47 seconds left in overtime, Jameson Breitzman kicked a lengthy pass to Carter Watson, who took a shot on goal, but the Basehor-Linwood goalie stopped it. As the ball rolled around near the net, Thaddeus Hileman was right there to knock in the chip shot and push the Chieftains to a 2-1 victory. The Bobcats fell to 3-9-1 with the loss.
Tonganoxie scored first with 10:15 left in the first half. Jaxon Albert connected for the goal following a Cody Lobb assist. Basehor-Linwood responded with 5:37 left in the half on Cameron Donn’s goal. The teams played to a scoreless second half before Tonganoxie got the golden goal after more than 9 minutes of overtime play.
THS has now won three in a row and six of its last eight matches.
The team faced Maur Hill-Mount Academy (8-3) after The Mirror’s print deadline on Tuesday at home and finishes the regular season Thursday at home against Seaman (6-8).
THS was the No. 8 seed in the Class 4-1A East Bracket. If the Chieftains can remain in that spot or move up, they’ll be guaranteed at least one home match in the playoffs. Baldwin is the current No. 1 seed in the east with a 12-2 record, while Bishop Miege is No. 2 at 12-3-1. Leaders in the West Bracket are No. 1 Rose Hill (14-1) and No. 2 Independence (11-2).
