A Leavenworth County woman has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after pleading guilty to theft stemming from a 2024 incident at Walmart, release from the office of Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson read.

According to court records, Tara Ann Huerta, 40, unlawfully obtained store merchandise valued at less than $1,500 on or about April 12, 2024, from the Walmart in Leavenworth. Police were dispatched to the store after employees reported Huerta had left without paying for items in her cart. Investigators said she had switched barcodes on merchandise to avoid paying full price.

On Jan. 29, the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office filed a complaint charging Huerta with one count of theft. She pleaded guilty as charged on June 13, and was formally found guilty by the court. On Aug. 22, a judge sentenced her to 12 months in the Leavenworth County Jail.

“It feels unfair that so many Americans work hard to afford what they need, while others try to take without putting in the same effort,” Thompson said.
