Tonganoxie VFW presents awards for essays, more

Tonganoxie students are recognized for their essays in the national VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voices of Democracy contests recently at the VFW Post Home.

Tonganoxie VFW Post 9271 celebrated students, educators and first responders last month the post home.

The local VFW recognized local winners in the national Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests. The Voice of Democracy contest is for high school students and Patriot’s Pen is open to junior high and middle school students.

This year’s Voice of Democracy winners were Kayleigh Williamson, Abby Burkhart and Owen Murray.

This year’s VFW teachers of the year were Matt Bond at Tonganoxie High School, Jeff Dickson at Tonganoxie Middle School and Michelle Smith at Tonganoxie Elementary School.

Smith also won VFW District 1 Elementary Teacher of the Year.

During that night’s festivities, the VFW also presented awards to local police, fire and emergency services personnel. More about those awards, as well as the Patriot’s Pen winners, will be published in an upcoming edition of The Mirror.
