John Williams

Memorial services with Masonic honors for John R. Williams, 64, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation is planned.
Mr. Williams died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at his home.
He was born June 23, 1944, in Lawrence, the son of Raymond F. and Marian Louise Williams. He grew up on a dairy farm near Reno. He was a member of 4-H and was a spokesman for the 4-H Foundation while in high school. He graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1962 and later attended Baker University.
Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Air Force as an airman. He worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant for 37 years and was a self-employed trim carpenter. He was a Mason and a member of the Henri Lodge of Tonganoxie and the Palmyra Lodge in Baldwin City. He was a district deputy grand master in 1978.
He was an avid bowler and participated in many leagues and national competitions. He was a member of the U.S. Bowling Congress Travel League for many years. He served as director of the Lawrence Bowling Association. He was a member of the SBA, USBC Youth Board, Kansas Bowling Council, and was the Kansas State Bowling Council president and president of the Greater Douglas County Bowling Association. He was inducted into the Kansas State Bowlers Hall of Fame in April 2008.
Mr. Williams married Mary F. Clark on Sept. 7, 1963, in Tonganoxie. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, John and wife Dawn, Golden, Colo., and Scott and wife Karen, Olathe; two daughters, Jeanne Goodrich and husband Barry, Nicholls, Ga., and Stephanie Givens, Lawrence; a brother, Jim and wife Krystal, Baldwin City; a sister, Jeanne Doege and husband Ken, Wichita; a sister-in-law, Jan Williams; 10 grandchildren, Jeremy, Steven, Katie, Matthew, Christopher, Arielle, Connor, Brandon, Ryan and Ashley; and a great-granddaughter, Kinsey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill.
The family will receive friends following the services.
The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence YABA/USBC Youth Scholarship Fund, Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or a charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of the funeral home.
