Donald Denney

PARSONS — A celebration of life service for Donald R. “Don” Denney, 86, Parsons, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Parsons. Mr. Denney died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.
He was born Dec. 1, 1922, in Seymour, Mo., the son of Ernest and Sallie (Day) Denney. He attended schools in Seymour before moving to Parsons where he was drafted in 1941 to serve in the U.S. Army in World War II.
Following his discharge, he returned to Parsons where he worked at Ankortite, the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center as an aide. He retired from the state hospital in 1984, but continued to serve as a guardian for residents there.
Mr. Denney was a member of the Friendship Southern Baptist Church where he was a founding member, served as a deacon, was past president of the “Brotherhood” Men’s Group and served as a leader of the Royal Ambassadors. He was a life member of Brown-Bishop Post 704 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association.
He married Maybelle Grace Stuart on Dec. 27, 1942, in Mound Valley. She survives.
Other survivors include two brothers, William G. Denney, Galesburg, and Guy Denney, Longview, Texas; a sister, Virginia Kinsch, Topeka; a son, Don Denney and his wife Pearl, Chetopa; two daughters, Sally O’Banion and husband Sonny of Parsons and Donna Curran and husband Mike of Baldwin City; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, one son, Daniel Denney, and one daughter, Candice Jones.
The family will hold a private funeral service with burial in Oakwood Cemetery prior to the memorial service. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, Parsons.
