Wanda and Stanley Cook

Graveside services for Wanda Maxine Cook, 82, and Stanley Carl Cook, 92, Andover, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City.
Mrs. Cook died, Monday, Aug. 3, 2009.
Mr. Cook died, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009.
Wanda Maxine Peddie was born Dec. 16, 1926, in Holland, Texas, daughter of Joe and Leola Peddie. She attended Holland schools and graduated from high school there.
Stanley Carl Cook was born Jan. 30, 1917, in Clifton, the son of William and Daisy Cook. He attended Clifton area schools and later moved to work in the dry cleaning business in Los Angeles. Mr. Cook enlisted in the Army on Dec. 10, 1941, and served until 1945. His World War II overseas duty was in the Aleutian Islands and his final military duty was training recruits at Camp Hood, Texas.
He met his wife at Camp Hood. The couple established their home in Baldwin City, where they operated Cook Cleaners and Laundry. Within a few years, they expanded their business to include a coin laundry in Baldwin City and Eudora. Following retirement, they traveled in their motor home, wintering in California or Texas. In 1993, they returned to Baldwin City. Mrs. Cook worked part-time in the cafeteria at Baker University. In 2007, they moved to Andover Life Care Center.
Mrs. Cook enjoyed sewing and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Hestia Study Club, and United Methodist Women. Mr. Cook enjoyed golfing, bird hunting, gardening and was a fan of Baldwin High School, Baker University and KU football. He was a member of the national and state chapters of the Association of Dry Cleaners, serving as president of the Kansas chapter. Mr. Cook was a member of the Baldwin First United Methodist Church, Lloyd Beaton American Legion Post No. 228 of Baldwin, the Baldwin Commercial Club and Baldwin Rotary. Both enjoyed fishing at Douglas State Fishing Lake and Pomona Reservoir. The couple spearheaded the bond effort to build Baldwin City’s first city pool in 1964.
He married Wanda Peddie on Dec. 19, 1945.
Survivors include a daughter, Belinda Carrol Swan and husband Tom, Wichita; a son, Stanley Dale and wife Katherine, Baldwin City; six grandchildren, Brad Swan, Jeff Swan, Sara Swan Busse, Jennifer Leftwich, David Cook and Justin Cook; nine great-grandchildren, Anthony, Katelyn, Slade, Jake, Cole, Benjamin, Lander, Aden and Badge; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cook is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Delmar; and two sisters, Jo Elaine and Theoma.
Mr. Cook is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Gerald, Frank, Hubert, Glenn, Bruce and Lyle; and four sisters, Eva, Alma, Nelda and Shirley.
Both are preceded in death by infant daughter, Carol Bethene.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City.
