Ala Nyman
Services for Ala Dell Nyman, 92, Lawrence, were Tuesday, July 14, at Alden-Harrington Funeral Home in Bonner Springs. Mrs. Nyman was cremated.
Mrs. Nyman died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence
She was born Dec. 22, 1916, in Linwood, the daughter of Carl and Harriet Meinke.
She graduated from Linwood High School in 1934 and completed her education degree in 1938 at Kansas University.
Mrs. Nyman remained a lifelong KU fan. She taught in a one-room school for two years and taught at Loring school for a year.
On June 29, 1941, she married Noel Nyman. They lived in Concordia and Osawatomie, Kansas before moving in 1949 to Bonner Springs. In 1956 she started teaching in the Bonner Springs school system and taught there for 25 years. She enjoyed teaching and often remembered the people she met and taught.
She moved to Lawrence in 1996.
Mrs. Nyman was a member of Bonner Springs United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, PEO Sisterhood, American Association of University Women, Mended Hearts, and Bonner Springs Volunteer Ambulance Service. She was on the Bonner Springs Library board for many years. A voracious book lover, she read more than 100 books a year for many years.
Her husband, Noel, died in 1993.
Survivors include two sisters, Eve Rouke, of Falmouth, Mass., and Barbara Kleist, Newport Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Barbara Nash and her husband, Alan, Lawrence; a son, Eric Nyman and his wife, Sara, Liberty, Mo.; four grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Bonner Springs United Methodist Church or Bonner Springs Public Library, sent in care of the funeral home, 214 Oak St., Bonner Springs, KS 66012.
